Are you licensed and insured?

A license will assure you that your contractor has gone through the necessary steps and has the basic knowledge that it takes to get their business legally improved. Insurance will cover you in the case that anything goes wrong during the installation process.

Are you NWFA certified?

The NWFA is the National Wood Flooring Association. Those that are NWFA certified are recognized as being the best in the business. They will be knowledgeable in the installation process and continue to educate themselves to maintain and advance their skill set.

What kind of warranty do you offer?

All wood installation work should be warrantied to ensure that work is done properly. Some warranties may be for 100 years while others may be for 90 days. While a 100 year warranty sounds ideal, warranties are typically specific to problems with the installation, which should become apparent within a 90 day window making these shorter warranties perfectly adequate.

Will they take time for proper acclimation?

Acclimation refers to getting the wood prepared for changes in the weather and humidity. If floors are not acclimated, they may begin to buckle or gap. Make sure your installer takes the time to perform this important step.

How long will the project take?

When you are having work done in your home, it can be difficult for you to enjoy your normal routine. Having a time line in mind will keep your work on schedule so you can make time for what needs to be done and ensure that there is an end in sight. Finding out you contractor’s schedule, i.e., will they be available on evenings weekends, etc., can be helpful as well.

Can you provide references?

It’s important to hire a contractor with a good reputation and customer references.  You can ask the contractor if they can refer you to other clients they worked with in the past or if they have testimonials or reviews available online. They might also be able show you pictures of past projects they have successfully completed so you can see the quality of their work.

The flooring in your home is meant to look great and last a long time. Getting the quality you need starts with finding the right contractor. If you are in the process of hiring a contractor, be sure to ask as many questions as you feel necessary until you are satisfied that the job will be completed successfully. Good luck finding the right contractor for your installation.
